You need 2.1.4 to get the varStatus feature.

If you can't upgrade then just keep your own counter:

<jx:set var="index" value="${0}">
<jx:forEach var="article" items="${availableArticles}">
    ...
    <jx:set var="index" value="${index + 1}"/>
</jx:forEach>
