  Im learning from both of you.  From the error you just posted,
it is not finding the main  sitemap.xmap.  It never even got a
chance to go to the sub-sitemap. 
  Is this from catalina.out log? or from its own context log (as
in app_name.todaysdate.txt) ? If you are wondering about this
context log, you can set it up in the config.xml for your
/app_name context like adding this element 
<Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger"
prefix="app_name." suffix="txt" timestamp="true"/>  This will
effectively add a logger specific to your app_name context.
