We did not upgrade xalan after the M2 release, so it seems there might
be yet another problem.

Dave, I assume you have nothing in your JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/endorsed
directory?

If so, could you create a simple reproducable testcase (and by
preference, file it as a bug in bugzilla)?
