You can use it, but, as you noted, changes in the referred document
will not cause the pipeline reexecuted. You can also run into severe
performance problems with certain Xalan versions.

The usually recommended worarounds are aggregation (in case the URL
is known at the sitemap level) or using XInclude (in case the URL
comes form some XML data, may need a transformation stage to transform
the input data in something with an xi:include element).
