The only limitation is performance. The longer the key the longer it'll be
looked up.

Any character that you can use in XML attributes (depends on the encoding of
your content). I am always using UTF-8 and hadn't noticed any problems with
neither of the 7 or 8 languages that are presented in the i18n sample.
