there are 2 solutions:
1: replace < by &lt;, & by &amp;, > by &gt;, ' by &apos;
2: embed your strings in CDATA sections: <![CDATA[  string.... ]]>

This should off course be done when generating the xml, not afterwards (I guess Cocoon ESQL
taglib does the first?).
