The problem you see was a bug which is now fixed, you should update from
CVS.

The latest CVS version of C2 is 2.0a6. You can get this from the new
Cocoon2 repository. Which changed a week ago. It can be accessed as 

cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@xml.apache.org:/home/cvspublic checkout
xml-cocoon2
