I think this is this mistake in the cocoon.properties that shipped with 
cocoon 1.8.2, which has now been fixed (many people reported  the same 
problem). Try changing

processor.xsp.pool.database.adaptor.DBMySQL
to processor.xsp.pool.database.adaptor.DBMM

that's the only difference I can see.
