I've got a similar problem since I've installed Cocoon 1.8.2.
My code:  "descs[count] = <esql:get-string column="ca_desc"/>;"  gives:
"500: Incompatible type for =. Can't convert org.w3c.dom.Node to
java.lang.String."
Did you find a solution.

and good luck : the DOM API is not very intuitive...
