When generating HTML I use:

response.setContentType("text/html; charset=windows-1251");


Maybe something similar must be done in your case?
Or, try to add encoding in the formatting XSL.
Encoding can be set also in the <xsl:output method="html" encoding="..."/>
but this is not supported in Cocoon.

Please, let me know if you solve this problem.

Tried to output Zízala  and got #í#ala back. There is something
wrong with encoding but how can I set this encoding. It probarly
uses the UTF-8 encoding. Tried to set this at the top of my xml file
but didn't seem to work: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="Cp1250"?>
