My bad.  I added your suggestion and it worked like a charm.

I would like to contribute this code example if possible to the release.  It
seems as if about 30% of the postings have something to do with formatting
data that comes from a database.  Adding this to a future release could
eliminate some of these postings.

Any suggestions???  I'll check it in and everything.

If this is the wrong list for making this suggestion, please let me know.

Did you check the source of the empty page generated???
When I run the same test it it seems that you are missing the 

<?cocoon-process type="xslt"?>

instruction in your xml file so that the xsl processing is never
called. So the output isn't HTML but it is shown if you look in the source
of the page.
