My temporary fix is to use the corresponding character entities;

they are: 
ä = &auml; = &#0228;
ö = &ouml; = &#0246;
ü = &uuml; = &#0252;

It's not much fun writing text like this, but I needed something working
quickly.

If anyone has a real solution for this, I'll be glad to hear about it.
