My classpath looks like this:
"d:\jdk1.3\lib\classes.zip;d:\jdk1.3\lib\tools.jar;d:\ATG\Dynamo4.5.1\localc
onfig\cocoon\bin\cocoon.jar"

I have tryed to add: "d:\tomcat\lib\xerces_1_0_3.jar;" to the beginning of
the path, with no succes.

In the beginnig of my "startup.bat" file, I have the following:

set cp=%CLASSPATH%

set CLASSPATH=.
set CLASSPATH=%TOMCAT_HOME%\classes

set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\xerces_1_0_3.jar
set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\xalan_1_0_1.jar
set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\fop_0_12_1.jar
set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\servlet_2_2.jar
set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\cocoon.jar

set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\webserver.jar
set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\jasper.jar
set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\xml.jar
rem set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\servlet.jar
set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%JAVA_HOME%\lib\tools.jar

Is this wrong?

Make sure Xerces is the first XML parser in your classpath.

org.apache.xerces.dom.ElementImpl.normalize(ElementImpl.java:290)

The normalize(Element) method is a DOM2 method, and you probably have
another
XML parser (like xml.jar, jaxp.jar, xml4j.jar, etc.) listed befor Xerces.
