If you take a look at the 'XML' that Office 2000 pumps out you probably
won't recognise it.

It seems that MS read a different specification to you or me ;)

But back to the XML->Excel problem.

Depending on the data you could create a different file type, such as sylk
or wks for example, the file formats for those are pretty much public, (see
www.wotsit.org ), which could then be opened in Excel with no problems.

Similar could be done for Word, just pump out RTF, there are a few RTF->XML
convertors out there (including  some Java ones), so I'd imagine that there
are also XML->RTF (maybe?!).
