I've attempted to follow the installation instructions at xml.apache.org to install Cocoon and it's prerequisites on my desktop machine. I'm running Windows 98, jdk1.2.2, Apache 1.3.9, Apache JServ 1.0, the latest Xerces and Xalan, and Cocoon 1.6. I've got the installation up to the point of displaying the JServ IsItWorking page. Now I'd like to view the samples. So I have some questions which must be really, really basic. 1. Do I list the xalan.jar and xerces.jar in my CLASSPATH variable in autoexec.bat? NO! Windows 98 has a problem with really long CLASSPATH or environment variables (I can't run Tomcat because I am out of environment space). JServ has a configuration that has wrapper.classpath entries, and it loads just fine with that. 2. Do I need to worry about the processor.xsp.repository setting in cocoon.properties? You should not worry about any settings in the cocoon.properties file until you need to tune Cocoon. Unfortunately, that information is a little scarce right now. 3. If I've installed Cocoon in C:\Cocoon, how do I set ApJServAction in the mod_jserv.conf file? I set up JServ in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache JServ. Does the default setting "ApJServAction .xml /servlets/org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon" work? Do I need to put in an absolute pathname, and if so, to where? You put the absolute path in the site.properties file. The installation instructions should have more details. 4. The install documentation refers to a Cocoon.xml page for Cocoon internal status. How do I get to it? It is automatically generated by Cocoon. Once Cocoon is properly installed, and you type Cocoon.xml on the url path, Cocoon will generate that page. 5. For that matter, how do I get to any of the samples in the Cocoon installation? Go to the samples directory in the Cocoon jar file. (I assume that you have unjarred the Cocoon-1.6.jar file). Just copy that information to the htdocs (or wherever your HTML files are storred) directory. One note of caution: DO NOT place the files in a mapped directory. If the directory is not physically on the disk, the XSP pages will not work properly. The glaring culprit: the dynamic syntax hilighting XSP page will not be able to find the page that needs to be rendered. 6. Do I need to copy Cocoon.jar into my Apache JServ\servlets directory? Not necessarily, but if you want JServ to automatically update Cocoon when you upgrade the binary, it should be there. Thanks for your help.
