Or use different tags, say in resemblance to XSLT:

<map:if path="...">
...
</map:if>

<map:choose>
  <map:when path="...">
    ...
  </map:when>
  <map:otherwise>
  </map:otherwise>
</map:choose>

map:match and map:select can the be deprecated and removed in a future
version.
