When you use a group widget just to group some widgets in order to apply some common functionality such as setting the state of all widgets by setting the state of the group then the id of the fi:group is not copied to its enclosed child element. Therefore using ajax will fail as the widget id is not present in the html output. 
This is solved in the forms-field-styling.xsl. See patch.
