Not sure I follow... doesn't my "null source" have a root node?  I could probably figure out
the differnce 
if I look at your code... can you cross-reference to a view-cvs link?

Anyway — meanwhile, I've cooled a little toward my own solution here... I definitely think
there should 
be a built-into-Cocoon way of getting an empty document, but I'm not sure it's very elegant
to have a 
whole component for this, as opposed to just saying:

    <generate src="resource:/org/apache/cocoon/generation/empty.xml">

Thoughts...?
