The problems must be somewhere in
src/blocks/mail/java/org/apache/cocoon/mail/MailMessageSender.java:

  Source source = resolver.resolveURI(this.src);
  sourcesList.add(source);
  if (source.exists()) {
      ds =
           new SourceDataSource(
              source,
              (this.srcMimeType == null
              ? source.getMimeType()
              : this.srcMimeType),
              this.src.substring(this.src.lastIndexOf('/') + 1));
  }

My guess would be that the component which is returned by
resolver.resolveURI(this.src) for a cocoon: URL will be some CocoonResolver? (I
could not find any class with that name.) And that component always returns a
mime type of text/xml instead of the MIME type which is the result of the pipleline.
