k...sorry.  The instructions on the wikki are not quite right.

I did not rebuild cocoon, but put the jdo jars in the web-inf/lib dir. 

This will not work as the relevant classes don't have the jdo related hooks 
compiled into them if Cocoon was compiled without the jdo jars in the 
cocoon/lib/local dir.
