I've made some changes, and now as a result I get a validation error message of:

Not a valid datatype.time.

Which is better, but still not exactly English.

It ought to read: Not a valid time.
 It looks like the name of the key is being substituted, not the value of the
message.
I don't know how this works, but I suspect the {0} in:
  <message key="datatype.conversion-failed">Not a valid {0}.</message>
is incorrect.
Or perhaps there is a two-stage lookup needed, and only 1 stage is being performed.
