Yes, I thought about an XML data type for CForms too some time ago 
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xml-cocoon-dev&m=107644540003885&w=2).
Unfortunately I didn't find the time to take a closer look at it.

Your solution sounds good to me.
