yes, the getRootCause() caused the useful info to be swallowed.

TOMCAT_HOME... it was TOMCAT_HOME in my case (and probably will be in yours);
jasper will create the temporary response file in the user's home dir (i.e.
taken from system property user.dir) if the classpath length exceeds 4K, which
is probably always the case with cocoon. so yes, a TOMCAT_HOME with spaces
should be enough to show the behaviour.
