In terms of above article this might also be of interesting:

The edutella project deals with a P2P network(using a kind of hypercup
topology) for Learning Objects which are described by set of RDF based
metadata and stuff.

In terms of that project a typical edutella client could be DSpace.

I heard it is discussed to use cocoon as a future basis for DSpace.
(I dunno exactly)
