By the look of things there should be an interface freeze for 2.0 final of HttpClient in the next 24 hours or so and thus in the next few days beta 1 should be released. I would strongly suggest if cocoon isn't already tracking CVS HEAD of HttpClient that it be upgraded to the beta to take advantage of these fixes. A positive side effect of the extra fixes is that the exception handling I mentioned in my original comment is no longer nessecary. The ideal usage scenario for HttpClient is now documented at http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/httpclient/tutorial.html Let me know if you need any particular HttpClient knowledge, I'm not sure who's on the Cocoon team.
