I'm aware of the problem. It is caused by the fact that the java.net.URL class
is used to resolve relative URL's, and that class only supports schemes
supported by the JRE.

We could write the relative-URL-resolving-logic ourselves of course, but then
there's still the problem that the cocoon:// and context:// protocols don't
follow RFC 2396 [1] and hence would require special treatement. See also the
discussion about "cocoon:// design bug" [2].
