Subject FYI Die Zeit XML Publishing with Apache httpd
Date Fri, 18 Apr 2003 10:47:21 GMT

Recently, "Die Zeit" a high profile weekly German national newspaper has
opened their archieves of online articles to the public. They use an
Apache httpd + xslt module approach for doing multi-channel.
Interestingly enough, they use something called "sitemap". See
http://software.zeit.de/software/index (German)

This prompted my to contact them and asked whether they have considered
Apache Cocoon instead of writing their own module for httpd and if on
what reasons their decision was based.

To sum up the answer:
* Cocoon was considered, but then it has been rather slow (no indication
which version was tested) -- their current httpd+libxslt setup is fast
enough that no caching is needed.
* Cocoon inspired the usage of a sitemap
* Other Cocoon features were not needed
* Developers have bad past experience with Java
* An embedded xslt library was needed anyways for clients
* libxslt is best of breed

	Chris.
