Build fails on WinXP when too many characters in the cocoon root directory

Summary: Build fails on WinXP when too many characters in the
                    cocoon root directory
           Product: Cocoon 2
           Version: 2.1M1
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Minor
          Priority: Other
         Component: core
        AssignedTo: cocoon-dev@xml.apache.org
        ReportedBy: morten@2ps.dk

build.bat fails on Windows XP when the directory path contains too many
characters (how many - I don't know).

The problem exists on my laptop which was bought last friday, with Windows XP
preinstalled. I have installed only Windows updates, Microsoft Office, cygwin,
PuTTY and Java SDK 1.4.1-02. Today I downloaded Cocoon 2.1M1, unzipped it into
C:\Projects\cocoon-2.1-M1, dropped to a cmd-box, and ran build. The result was
that the "javadocs" target crashes with the following error below.
The workaround for this is to do "subst Y: C:\Projects\cocoon-2.1-M1" making a
new logical drive Y:, that points to C:\Projects\cocoon-2.1-M1. If I change to
Y: in the cmd-box and run build form there the problem goes away. BTW. I have
seen the same problem on Win2K building the from CVS HEAD.

The following is an snipped transcript of what I did:
