regexp matcher fails on certain patterns

When trying to match an entry (eg. 2003/01/27/promo.txt), when the match

<map:match type="regexp" pattern="(\d{4}/\d{2}/\d{2})/promo\.txt">

is used, the match fails with an internal servlet error.  If, however, the match

<map:match type="regexp" pattern="(\d\d\d\d/\d\d/\d\d)/promo\.txt">

is used, the match succeeds.  These should be identical, but the regexp matcher
doesn't seem to handle pattern sequences.
