Damn you're right : I was focused on the StringBuffer.append() problem, 
and forgot about JDBC. Can't dynamic proxies help for this ? This was 
proposed in 
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xml-cocoon-dev&m=101904196229220&w=2 but 
there was no follow up.
