Well it's hard to call mod_alias a module - I can't imagine many serious
Apache server being compiled without it. You're thinking of mod_rewrite,
which is just scary ;-)

Of course mod_alias only maps directories, but then Apache doesn't have
any concept in http_core of dynamic generation, so it doesn't need
anything more.
