Yes that's to consider indeed. That stuff seems to be simple, but the
devil is in the detail. Maybe we can build in an option to on/off
saving on disk?

Yep. Try the JispFilesystemStore in the Scratchpad. It's well tested
and nearly complete. You can use it as fast Filesystem Store. It's
a B-Tree implementation. Check out:
