I landed in this same situation other day, wherein xconf had caching
pipeline defined but when I checked log file(s) it showed nonchaching
pipeline getting initialized.

On cheching the source found that in sitemap.roles by default following
is defined,

name=3D"org.apache.cocoon.components.pipeline.StreamPipeline"
       shorthand=3D"stream-pipeline"
=20
default-class=3D"org.apache.cocoon.components.pipeline.NonCachingStreamPi=

	 <role

default-class=3D"org.apache.cocoon.components.pipeline.NonCachingEventPip=

On changing this to CachingStreamPipeline and CachingEventPipeline
respectively the cache started working like a gem. Atleast this did the
trick for me, hope it does for you.

The settings from CVS are with Caching...Pipelines. I got nothing in the
cache-dir, too. What could be the cause?
