Look again: I used only two table nested, one for the sitebar area and
one for the content area. The other tables on top are sequential, thus
very light.

I know, that's where pagination should kick in.

I'll try to use CSS2 properties and <div> sections for the sitebar, but
I'm not sure if I can get the same portability.
