It should work.  Remove any precompiled classes from the repository.
Oh, and the correct way to get a Serializer:

ComponentSelector selector = (ComponentSelector) manager.lookup(Roles.SERIALIZERS);

Serializer serializer = (Serializer) selector.select("yourHintHere");
