This doesn't look like it's Cocoon-specific.

Try writing some simple JNDI code to illustrate the problem (eg, in the
JNDI Tutorial: http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/tutorial/) and ask in
the jndi-interest mailing list
(http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/staytouch.html).
