Just my two cents on this discussion:

it might help if this were related to an example.

I can think of one common situation, that should be easy to relate to,
but at the same time is relatively sophisticated:

A index of photos.

This could come from different sources/pipelines, for instance:

per image:

- RDF meta information stored in JPEG files.
eg. http://www.w3.org/TR/2000/NOTE-photo-rdf-20000928/
this document also lists similar projects.

- width and height, extracted from graphic file (perhaps this
could be combined with the above).

- somewhere along the line, a thumbnail (small, low resolution,
version of the photo).

per directory:

- list of photos to include, and where to find them.

Is this possible/practical?
