Make sure in your XSL page you include a cocoon-format processing instruction.
You can have something like this:

<xsl:template match="/">
  <xsl:processing-instruction name="cocoon-format">
    type="text/wml"
  </xsl:processing-instruction>
  <xsl:apply-templates/>
</xsl:template>
