Hold on a minute - the operating system should already cache frequently used 
files. So the only gains with option 1 are

1) If you can do more optimal cacheing than the OS? (Really???)
2) avoiding OS calls (probably negligible)
or 3) avoiding encoding conversion done by a Reader (again, time saved is 
probably negligible)
