        byte[] str = nf.format(60.0/0).getBytes();
        for (int i=0; i<str.length; i++) {
            System.out.println(str[i]);
        }

gives me (in the servlet):

63 (0x3F)
37 (0x25)

Plain old ASCII for ?%

Weird!
