Would a discuss thread to get a lazy consensus of finalists work?

OK. I agree with that. We may want to figure out how to vote on this since we are voting on:
- which variations we want to allow for use
- how many to approve

On Jun 10, 2016 11:58 AM, "John Burwell" <<>>

So long as I have been around, the PMC has never voted to accept the vote of the community.
Since PMC members cast binding votes and all votes require a minimum number of bind ing votes,
the notion of PMC “acceptance” is baked into all votes. If you feel we are ready for
a vote, it should be sufficient to open a [VOTE] thread on dev@ explaining the changes to
the marketing and trademark guidelines.

On Jun 10, 2016, at 11:11 AM, Will Stevens <<>>

@John, if you concerned about the PMC's ownership of the vote, we could potentially hold a
vote after the public one to approve what the public vote chooses. Does this resolve any
concerns you may have with this?

On Fri, Jun 10, 2016 at 11:08 AM, Will Stevens <<>>
I personally don't think the vote should be done in private@ for this one. I think the vote
should be held with all of the following lists included: marketing@, dev@ and users@

I think it is important that the user and marketing teams who are using ACS have a say on
this topic as it is not code related and is more likely to affect their use cases than that
of a contributing developer.

On Fri, Jun 10, 2016 at 10:38 AM, John Burwell <<>>

I agree that we need a vote, but I don’t see why it needs to be private. Since the conversation
has been public, why don’t we vote across all committers on dev@?

On Jun 10, 2016, at 10:17 AM, Will Stevens <<>>

I would like to bump this conversation. I would like for us to select a few of these and
then vote on them in the PMC for the purpose of adding them to our official marketing and
trademark guidelines pages.

Agreed, and Will, this looks great. A font for each element would also need to be defined
in the branding guidelines.

On Friday, 13 May 2016, Tim Mackey <<>>
That's exactly what I had in mind, Will.

btw, I rather like Julia's "contributor to" role logo idea as well.

I feel anything which adds to brand identity and allows users to spread the word is a good

You are looking for something like this, right Tim? Pardon the choice of font, I am not a

the color pallet template.

One observation I'd make is that the proposed logos all work well if you have a white (or
light) background. It would be good to have a variant which allows for a dark background.

To my eye, most of the "powered by" statements are too small. I like the weight of #9, but
wish it included the monkey. Maybe something along the lines of #8, but with the font size
for the "powered by" of #9 with the "powered by" statement placed centered above the "apache
cloudstack" emblem? I'm not a designer or I'd mock something up to better visualize what's
in my head. For me, the monkey is part of our brand identity, and I'd hate to see it subordinate
in a logo program.

Haha. I am not sure if I should be taking that as a compliment or not Giles. :P

On the topic of the branding colors, I have not found any color guidelines for marketing material
(and I have looked). Is that because we don't have one, or is it just because my google foo
is weak?

While I agree the the "color" version is the most consistent with the current branding, is
there anything that says we can't use colors that better match the context in which the graphics
are used? If we do want to restrict the colors, I think we should definitely think about
creating a color guide which we all use.

I ask because the graphic designer in me actually likes the dark blue version in many cases.
In addition to that, we will need to increase our marketing activities going forward and
having quality guidelines and resources will help us present a cleaner and higher quality

I don't want to derail this conversation, but I thought it was relevant considering Giles

Andre – this is great work – thanks for progressing

I agree 100% with everything Will said
(which is strange for me)

I’ll refine his comments a little more

Although I like the novelty of 6, I think 7 will be more usable.
I think both 8 and 9 would be useful in different situations

So, if possible I’d suggest that we publish 7,8 and 9

I suggest that we only publish the blue versions of each as the colour is quite intrinsic
to the brand

I’m sure some people will disagree. If anybody does, shout in the next day or two and we
can have a vote on this list so Andre can progress (which I think will be the first ever vote
on marketing@)

Kind Regards

I think that #4 and #5 are the least useful because Apache CloudStack is not mentioned and
the monkey alone does not have enough brand recognition in order for those to effectively
present the Apache CloudStack project (IMHO).

#6 and #7 are my favorite vertical versions. #8 and #9 are my favorite horizontal versions.
I think in some situations #1 will also be useful.

Hi Andre,

Congratulations by the great job! All of them are very good, I think the 3/9 and 2 are the
best, in this order.

I didn't get the difference between 3 and 9, unless the size.

Hello to all,

sorry for the delay, but our designer was off for some weeks.
But finally we have put together some proposals and I personally like the idea with the “stamp
“ (option 5 or 6) best. So you can stamp your homepage or any other Marketing Material with
“powered by ACS”. And we can easily include the proposal of Giles and replace the slogan
“powered by” with "supporter of" or "contributor to"

Kindly have a look at following URL and we are
looking forward for your comments and feedback.

Hi Andre - welcome to the community - great to see you here and I look forward to working
with you and your colleagues

It's great news that you can dive straight in with this important work

I can't find the old thread on this, but in summary I think it stalled because the cloudstack
logo didn't fit nicely inside the "powered by" circle that Sally references ( it resulted
in the cloudstack logo being very small)

Maybe it could be made to work bu somebody with an eye for design. But as ilya says, we don't
have to stick with that design - it's not obligatory

Maybe best to come up with some ideas and post a link here

Also : I've always thought that it would be good to give some options that are not just "powers

A few with words like "supporter of" and "contributor to" would be great

Kind Regards

Thanks, André --your timing is good, actually.

We just launched the new ASF identity yesterday, and will continue rolling out the new assets
over the next few months.

To that end, we have an existing "Powered By Apache" campaign that can be used generally or
specifically with certain Apache projects. Please see

Again, given that our launch was just 26 hours ago, the icon for Apache CloudStack on file
is the old one, but still very much valid. If this fits your needs, feel free to use as appropriate.

Subject: Supported by ACS logo

Dear all,

I am pretty new to CloudStack community and want to start my thread with a short introduction.
I am working for BIT.Group GmbH and heading the area called “Cloud Services”. There we
are delivering Infrastructure Management Services to big customers (mainly SAP) with a clear
focus on open source technologies. That means we do classical IT outsourcing specialized on
implementing and operating virtualization and OS layer with Experts / Administrators in Germany
(Dresden) and China (Shanghai).

Giving this background we started last year to build up an own “BIT.Cloud” and decided
to use Apache Cloud Stack and Ceph as focus technologies. Our experiences with ACS are really
good (clearly we find the one or the other optimization potential ;-)), we had great interactions
in the community already and we decided to deepen our involvement. So hopefully you will hear
now inputs from our side quite more often and we especially want to increase the CloudStack
presence in the German speaking area.

What we currently miss is a kind of “supported by ACS” logo, because we want to publish
our Cloud offering with a clear statement of our focus technologies. I heart that there were
already discussions in the past, but somehow it did not come to an end. Do you also see the
need or in general would you support the initiative to get such a logo?

In case most of you answer the question with yes, I see following main questions:

• Would you use the cloud stack (word), the monkey logo or the combination of both?
• Are there any legal restrictions which we have to consider (e.g. does somebody
has to approve this from ASF side?)
• Do you know why the initiative in the past did not succeed?
• Did someone in the past already created some drafts or similar?
• In case we have some logo proposals clearly some will like it and some won’t.
Will we start a voting procedure or how does this work usually?

Please excuse this maybe stupid questions, but as I initially wrote, I am quite new to this

My wish would be, that everybody can use such a “supported by” logo in case he wants to
and I would offer to engage our designer, to prepare some design proposals and share the results
with you.

I am looking forward for a fruitful discussion and your feedback.

Thanks and best regards.
