I like the idea of a survey, I also know that the Linux Foundation had pitc=
hed us doing a survey to generate buzz before CCC.
The scope and the ability to quantify results is key so you can quantify th=
e data set and spot trends. I took your questions and comments and tried to=
 combine them in a survey that would be rather comprehensive. I also have a=
 section on Big Data and use cases to see if we have some synergy there but=
 questions 35-40 are very optional. I am thinking if you publish the result=
s they would get picked up by media and it would be interesting to see if A=
CS has some synergies with Apache Hadoop.

If you do the survey I think you want to have a way to concisely deliver th=
e results(e.g. an infographic).
Here=92s an example of how we exposed the results before the great Apache e=
nlightenment it also generated a lot of buzz for the Cloud.com<http://Cloud=

When we ran the last survey (June 2013), we had long debates on this list a=
round the content of that survey, what questions should be asked and how we=

The end result was that I created this survey

 in private@ for confidentiality.

Since that survey, we only have anecdotal evidence of user adoption. This i=
s something that we MUST change IMO

My proposal is this:
1.       We discuss on this list the format of that survey (using the exist=
ing one as a starting point)  - what questions should be  asked, what we wi=
sh to establish. From the previous discussions, different people had differ=
ent objectives for the survey
2.       We then leave that survey open on a rolling basis. We could link t=
o it from cloudstack.a.o (=93using Cloudstack? =96 tell us here=94).
Hopefully, this will feed data into the =93whos using cloudstack=94
3.       As before, the raw data will be shared at @private level and analy=
sis of that data for publication can be performed  by a group of PMC folks


Heres my initial comments on changes to the original (mine are mostly marke=
ting related):

1.       We should ask about their community involvement, whether they are =
signed up on mailing lists, etc (and can use this opportunity to TELL them =
about mailing lists)
2.       Ask them what country they are based in (good for analysis)
3.        If they are not the person who is responsible for making the =93w=
e can talk about it=94 decision: we should ask them who is
4.       =93In one line, describe what you use cloudstack for=94
5.       Ask them specifically if they would be prepared to do a case study=
 around cloudstack
6.       Update/more specific version numbers
7.       Ask them WHY they chose cloudstack
8.       Create a Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, French, Spanish,etc versio=
n of the survey (I can take on Portuguese & Spanish =96 will need help with=
 the others)
