Subject [jira] [Commented] (CLOUDSTACK-451) System VMs shouldn't be just Debian based
Date Wed, 07 Nov 2012 15:51:12 GMT

Marcus Sorensen commented on CLOUDSTACK-451:

This would perhaps provide incentive to document how the system VM is set up. I don't see
a lot of people rolling their own, but if we switch to API control and have the system VM
setup documented, that certainly opens the door for people to do what they want.

> Currently our System VMs are a Debian based template which are pretty big.
> If we abstract the way we talk to the System VM by adding an API it shouldn't matter
anymore which distro or OS will be running in there.
> Some users might want to use a different distribution or build their own homebrew System
VM as long as they implement the API.
> Most System VM tasks can be done in Read-Only mode as well, the filesystem of the System
VM doesn't need to be R/W, which would make them more robust.
> In the end a System VM shouldn't have to be bigger then something like 50MB when stripped
> This issue is here to raise awareness that this has to be addressed at some point.
