Hi David,

That should be posisble by using:
/alfresco/wcservice/cmis
as your endpoint rather than
/alfresco/service/cmis
The first one uses Alfresco' authentication chain. The second one always 
uses basic authentication.
We use this with external authentication (remote user in http header)
