You only need patch for sstableloader.
You don't have to upgrade your cassandra servers at all.

So,

1. fetch the latest cassandra-2.1 source
    $ git clone https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf/cassandra.git
    $ cd cassandra
    $ git checkout origin/cassandra-2.1
2. build it
    $ ant
3. use sstableloader you just built
    $ bin/sstableloader ....
