This is almost right: the only problem is that the error response is in v3/v4 form (e.g. 9
byte header). Since the node knows that we're trying to speak v1 or v2, the response needs
to be of that form, too.

I believe this goes back to 3.0) with a protocol version of 1, C* doesn't send a response
to the client. If you specify a high protocol version (e.g. 5), C* does correctly respond
with a protocol error.
