As an operator who has encountered a number of serious issues related to large amounts of
hints in SSTables (for example "runaway compaction" of 50GB+ of hints), I +1 this approach
in a general sense.

I would be shocked and amazed if the cost of this is higher than what we pay to store hints
in SSTables, compact them, and so on.
