It would be great if we can timeout a validation compaction which is taking long or had an exception while doing a Validation. 

Repair can gossip its status to all the other nodes, hence any node which is waiting for response of a "tree request" to wait until it complete, if the repair is not going to complete because of exception or because it is too busy taking the incoming request we can timeout the user request.

Bonus: By displaying the repair gossip via nodetool, user/script running the request can have a better handle on whats going on in the cluster.
