I agree we should mirror the 2ary index impl, which means it becomes a synchronous operation.
Frankly I think that's ok since it's the only way to know the client will know the data was
written AND the trigger was executed.  If a user wants asynchronous behavior, then the trigger
implementation can simply schedule a action in a local queue.
