bq. i think limit - offset is what capacity() gives you. 

turns out this is wrong.

what we really want is capacity - offset.  limit is some weird-ass inverse mark.  Buffer doc
explains,

bq. 0 <= mark <= position <= limit <= capacity ... A read-only buffer does not
allow its content to be changed, but its mark, position, and limit values are mutable.
